With this feat, the Wii gets the distinction of becoming the fastest selling console in the history of gaming consoles. The study by VG Chartz states that a total of 10.6 M Wii units have been sold, which is a little above the Xbox 360’s estimated 10.5 million. Since its launch, the Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 by a margin of above 2.3:1. As per VG Chartz, the disclosed figures are based on sample data from retailers worldwide, till Wednesday, 23rd August, 2007.
To calculate the sales of the Wii, the site segregated the sales of the Nintendo Wii between three markets, namely Japan (3.46 million consoles), America (4.24 million consoles), Europe, Australia, and others (combined 2.87 million consoles).
On the other hand, the third competitor in the next-gen console was, i.e. Sony’s PS3 has sold only 4.3 million units around the world since its launch in November 2006.
At present the DS and Wii are the top two selling systems in the gaming industry. Nintendo had attained the top spot this time around. The last time it was on the numero uno podium in 1994 when the company’s Super NES and Game Boy lines were on the top.
Furthermore, the report claims that inspite of frequent shortages, Wii has managed to become the fasting selling console of all time selling at a greater pace than the most extensively purchased console in history, Sony’s PlayStation 2.
In a statement on the company’s official website, VG Chartz states, “In just two years, home console sales for the three major manufacturers have effectively reversed.” Adding, “This will have a large impact on third party publishers and will undoubtedly influence the decisions they make in the future.”
For a fact, Wii has always got one factor on its side as compared to the other next gen-consoles, and that’s its affordable price. And the games too are exciting!
